I have recently been learning C++ and it is much harder to pick up then any language I've tried to program. While hard to learn the possibilities are far beyond what actionscript could accomplish. However, I feel that programming anything in a C++ environment consumes considerably more time then in the Unity/Flash environment. Setting up an engine or using someone else's engine can be a hassle but I find it a lot of fun to program shaders and see the different effects. While the effects are still minor, it is nice to see the possibilities.
